Ralph “Ted” Tracy Coe was an art historian, collector of Native American art, Museum Curator (Assistant Curator, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 1958-1959; Curator, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 1959-1977; Assistant Director, 1965-1977), Museum Director (1977-1982; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art), and founder of the Ralph T. Coe Foundation. Coe’s collection included, among more than 1,000 works of art, Native American ceremonial and utilitarian pieces, war bonnets, pipes, baskets, masks, decorated blankets, ceramic jars, weapons and beaded garments. Coes' father, Ralph M. Coe (1883-), was an Iron factory owner, collector of French Impressionist art, and a Trustee of the Cleveland Museum of Art. |
