Hopps helped establish Los Angeles galleries such as the Syndell Gallery (1951) and the Ferus Gallery (1957). He curated exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum (1959–1967), Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Joseph Cornell Study Center at the Smithsonian, the Menil Collection, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Monterrey (1991–1999), and the Whitney Museum of Art (1996).
