history George Perkins Marsh was an art collector, lawyer, congressman diplomat and conservationist who was appointed minister of both Turkey (1949-54) and Italy (1860-82).

Though his collection included sculpture and painting, Marsh primarily collected prints, etching and engravings. His collection included work by Titian, Guido, Reynolds, Rubens, Hiram Powers, G.P.A. Healy, Thomas Crawford, Eastman Johnson, and Charles Lanman.

The Smithsonian Institution purchased his art collection in 1849. After 1865 portions of it were deposited in the Library of Congress and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

In the late 1880s, the Smithsonian retrieved many of the prints, and the collection is now held jointly by the National Museum of American History and the Library of Congress.

Marsh was married twice. In 1828 he married his first wife, Harriet Buell (d. 1933); and in 1839, Marsh married Caroline Crane of Berkley, Massachusetts.
