history Collector and corporate lawyer, Irving Sands Olds (1887-1963), was the chairman of U.S. Steel from 1940 to 1952 and also served as a trustee and president of The New-York Historical Society.

Olds' interest in history focused on American pre-Civil War naval engagements and commanders, especially the young navy's prowess in the War of 1812.

The NYHS Prints Department holds part of Old's collection -- approximately 450 prints, chiefly engravings, also etchings, lithographs, aquatints, mezzotints, and woodcuts.

Olds served as trustee for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the American Shakespeare Festival and Academy in Stratford, CT.

He married Miss Evelyn Foster of New York in 1917, she died July 26, 1957.
