history |
Carl W. Hamilton was an industrialist (Philippine Refining Corp.) and art collector. Hamilton focused his collecting on works of art from the Renaissance. Hamilton lent work from his collection to exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, to the Grand Central Galleries and American Federation of Arts. His collection included work by, among others, Piero della Francesca, Fra Filippo Lippi, Fra Angelico, Giovanni Bellini, Benvenuto di Giovanni, Francesco Botticini (Francesco di Giovanni), Domenico Veneziano, Sandro Botticelli, Puccio di Simone and Allegretto Nuzi, Titian, dei Conti, Francia, Perugino, Melzi, Desiderio and Mantegna. A small oil painting Piero Della Francesca of the crucifixion, from Hamilton’s collection, set an auction record in 1929 when it was sold to Duveen for $375,000. Hamilton lent work from his collection to exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, Montclair Museum in New Jersey, the Grand Central Galleries and American Federation of Arts. The Hamilton home in Great Neck, New York housed Renaissance paintings, sculptures, tapestries and bric-a-brac. When his collection outgrew his Great Neck home he moved to a 14-room apartment on Park Avenue, Manhattan. Never married, Hamilton had one adopted son, John Gordon Hamilton of Oxford, North Carolina. |
