history |
Nee Elma Ellsworth Dows, Mrs. Thaw married Benjamin Thaw (1859-1933) in 1886 (son of banker and industrialists William Thaw, 1818-1889). Mrs. Thaw collected gothic sculpture and primitive Italian paintings. She owned work by Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, Giovanni della Robbia, Cosimo Rosselli, Fra Angelico de Fiesole, Murillo and Benadetto da Majano. In 1916, Mrs. Thaw purchased a wooden French Gothic sculpture, St. George Slaying the Dragon for $40,000. Thaw loaned a significant portion of her collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1917. In 1934, works from her collection were sold in an auction in New York via American Art Association Anderson Galleries, Inc. |
