history John Jacob Astor IV was a collector, financier, writer and inventor. He is the great-grand son to John Jacob Astor, 1763 the fur trader and real estate tycoon.

Astor financed the Astoria section of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the Hotel St. Regis (1905) and the Knickerbocker (1906).

As stated in the New York Times (June 14, 1913, page1) Astor owned Millet's "Goose Girl" and "Women with the Lamp," Schreyer's "Horses at the Watering Trough," Corot's "Le Nid," Meissonier's "The Smoker," and Van Marcke's "Dans les Dunes."

According to The Art Treasures of America, Astor owned "Calling the Roll of the Condemned (During the Reign of Terror)" by Charles Louis Muller, Edward Zamacoïs' "The Rival Confessors, and works by J. Aubert, L. Bonnat, A. De. Boucherville, W. A. Bouguereau, Samuel Coleman, A. De Neuville, E. Detaille, J. Domingo, Ferguson, Ed. Frère, J. L. Gérôme, S. R. Gifford, C. C. Griswold, L. A. Gros, G. H. Hall, J. B. Irving, F. Jaccovacci, F. Kaemmerer, G. Köbel, J. Lefebvre, Louis Leloir, E. Lepoittevin, H. Leroux, R. Madrazo, J. L. E. Meissonier, Meyer Von Bremen, F. D. Millet, A. F. Monfallet, A. Moreau, C. L. M ller, E. Pagliano, W. T. Richards, A. Riedel, L. Rossi, F. Roybet, J. É. Saintin, A. F. A. Schenck, Karl Schlesinger, E. A. Schmidt, A. Schreyer, Simon St. Jean, A. Toulmouche, E. Astor was married twice firstly to Ava Lowle Willing (1868-1958) in 1891 which ended in divorce in 1910, his second marriage was to Madeleine Talmadge Force (1893-1940). Astor was a casualty of the Titanic disaster.
