Dr. Philip Gillette Cole collected paintings, sculpture, photographs, lithographs, etchings, books and papers specializing in Native American and Western art. Cole’s collection included sculpture by Charles Russell, Frederic Remington, James Earle Fraser, Alexander Phimster Proctor, Malvina Hoffman, H.A. MacNeil, A.A. Weinman and other important American sculptors. Thomas Gilcrease purchased Cole’s collection in 1947. Cole was a member of the Canon Club of Princeton, New York's Union League and University Clubs, the Sons of the American Revolution, Ardsley Country, Sleepy Hollow Country, and Montana clubs as well as the lodges of the Elks and Masons in Helena, MT. |
