history |
Ninah May Holden Cummer was an art collector, garden enthusiast and civic leader. Cummer collected work by, among others, Paul King (American, 1867-1947), Augusta Savage, Agnolo Gaddi (Italian, 1350-1396), Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640), Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910), and Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819-1904). Although Cummer made art purchases before the death of her husband the bulk of the collection was built after his death. In 1958, Cummer made the bequest to create a Museum Foundation for the benefit of the people of Jacksonville, Florida. Her gift included an art collection, a museum to house it, and funds for expansion. Cummer was a founder of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and served as president from 1927-1929. She was married to the lumber baron Arthur Gerrish Cummer (1873-1943) in 1897. |
