Lillian Martha Henkel Haass was an art collector and patron. Haass served as trustee and president of the Detroit Museum of Art Founders Society, was active with the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (president 1933-1938), member of the board of the Detroit Artist’s Market, and an active supporter of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Lillian was married to and collected art with Julius H. Haass (1856-1931) who was a Detroit banker. After Julius died she continued their philanthropic and collecting efforts. She purchased 15th century French and Spanish paintings, 17th Century Dutch, as well as work by Martin Edgar Ferrill, Jacob van Hulsdonck, and Aelbert Cuyp. Mrs. Haass also collected ancient Egyptian, Iranian, and African, (Nazca South Coast, 19th Century Baule) in addition to late 19th/early 20th Century Balinese art. Among other items, Haass's decorative arts collection included a Chantilly Manufactory Tureen, Omar Ramsden silver ewer, and stained glass by the Master of the Saint Alexis Roundels. |
