history Edwin Stanton Bayer was an art collector, lawyer, president and general manager of Julius Kayser Co., a silk glove and hosiery manufacturer.

The Bayer collection included 18th Century French, Gothic, and Renaissance art. Bayer was a member of the Harvard, Century, Westchester, Biltmore Country Clubs and the Aldine Association.

Bayer graduated from Harvard in 1890, Columbia Law School in 1893 and joined the New York Bar Association in 1894. In 1895, Bayer married Laura Kayser Bayer (1874-1961), nee Laura Bache Kayser, the daughter of Julius Kayser who was the founder of Kayser Company.

In 1931, Mrs. Bayer married the art dealer and former French diplomat Count Antoine de Sala (1876-1946).

There were two sales solely featuring works of art from Mr. and Mrs. Edwin S. Bayer's art collection:

1. Paris, 1933, Galerie Charpentier: Tableaux anciens; œuvres des écoles primitives et de la Renaissance par Bartolommeo Veneto, Corneille de Lyon, Lucas Cranach, Adriaen Isenbrant, Le Maître des Demi-Figures de Femme, Bartolommeo Montagna, Ludger Tom Ring, Sano De Pietro, Sassetta, etc.

2. New York, 1961, Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc.: The Countess Sala Collection of French Furniture Bronze Dore, Paintings, Sculptures, Porcelains, Ailver, Tapestries, Rugs Nov. 17 & 18, 1961.

Dr. Walter Heil published an essay on the French art from the Bayer collection in Pantheon, 1928.
