history Arthur M. Sackler was an art collector, patron, psychiatrist, biological psychiatry pioneer and philanthropist.

Dr. Sackler's collecting was vast in range covering China, India, the Middle East; from pre-Columbian and Renaissance periods through the School of Paris. He collected pre-Renaissance to post-Impressionism to the School of Paris, and also supported contemporary American painters.

The bulk of Sackler’s collection and expertise was in Oriental art and the foundation for the Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sackler Musuem in Washington DC.
