LeGrand Lockwood was a collector, businessman and financier (Shipman, Coming & Co.; T. Ketchum & Co.; Genin & Lockwood; Lockwood & Company). Lockwood served as a director of the New York Central Railroad and treasurer of the New York Stock Exchange. Lockwood’s collection included work by, among others, Bierstadt, Bradford, van Schendel, Hasenclever, David Neal, Oswald Achenbach, Kraus, Verboeckhoven, Cooper, Preyer, Sohn, Carl Brown, S. Guy, McEntee, Shattuck, W H Beard, Herzog, S R Gifford, A. B. Durand, J G. Brown, and Carl Becker. LeGrand Lockwood married Ann Louisa Benedict (m. June 9, 1842), she was the daughter of Seth Williston Benedict of New York City. Their home is a National Historic Landmark (1971) and known as the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. |
