history Richard Haines Halstead was a business man (New-York Stock Exchange), horseman, sportsman, art collector and patron of George Inness.

Halsted formed collections of Chinese porcelains (American Art Galleries exhibition 1903) and paintings from his contemporaries and old masters.

His collecting included work by, among others, Alexander Helwig Wyant (American, 1836–1892), Robert Ward Van Boskerck (American, 1855–1932), Robert Bruce Crane (American, 1857–1937), H. Bolton Jones (American, 1848–1927), William Bliss Baker (American, 1859–1886), Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839–1924), Carl Ludwig Brandt (German, 1831–1905), Jean-Jacques Henner (French, 1829 –1905), Jehan Georges Vibert (French, 1840–1902), William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825 –1905), Tamburini, Constant, Jules Breton (French, 1827–1906), Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer (Dutch, 1839-1902), Jules Jacques Veyrassat (French, 1828–1893), and Gustave Jean Jacquet (1846-1909).

In 1887, Ortgies & Co., sold a collection of Halstead’s paintings. Halstead’s collection of George Inness paintings was auctioned by the American Art Association (AAA) in 1895, reaching $31,350.

Halsted was a member of the Metropolitan, New York Yacht, New York Athletic, Racquet and Tennis and the Sleepy Hollow Clubs.

He married the former Beuhla Whittier in 1915. His parents were Mary Louisa Haines Halsted (1835–1883) and William Mills Halsted, Jr. (1827–1895). He had two sisters; Mary Louisa “Minnie” Vander Poel (Husband Samuel O. Vanderpoel) and Bertha Halstead Terry (husband John T. Terry); and one brother Dr. William Stewart Halsted (1852 –1922).
