history |
Mrs. Schuyler Van Rensselaer, née Mariana Alley Griswold, was an art collector, critic and author. She was the daughter of New York merchant George Griswold, educated both home and abroad, and married Schuyler Van Rensselaer in 1873. Van Rensselaer left art to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard’s Fogg Museum, American Academy of the Arts and Letters, and the Connecticut College for women. These gifts included, among others, an oil painting attributed to Jacobus Cuyp, a painting from the Neapolitan school, a bust by the American Sculptor Herick Christian Anderson, and work by Charles Sargent, Joseph Pennell, Piranesi and Seymour Halden. |
