history Robert "Bob" Smith was an art collector, real estate mogul and philanthropist.

Smith and his wife, Clarice Chasen Smith, collected European paintings before focusing on Italian bronze Renaissance sculptures.

Their collection includes, among others, work by Giovanni Bologna, Giovanni Francesco Susini, Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi, Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Abraham Bloemaert, Hans Bol, François Boucher, Willem Buytewech, Canaletto, Agostino Carracci, Thomas Gainsborough, Jacues de Gheyn II, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Willem, after Kalf, Jacopo Ligozzi, Pieter Molijn, Pablo Picasso, Roelandt Savery, Sebastiano del Piombo, David Teniers the Younger, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, and David Vinckboons.

Smith's sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Robert P Kogod, are also art collectors whose collection focuses on Modern and Contemporary art, especially work by American artists.

Smith's entire collection was promised to the National Gallery where for ten years he served as president of the board of trustees (1993-2003).
