William Wilson Corcoran was an art collector, patron, philanthropist, financier (Corcoran & Riggs Bank), and in 1869, he established the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC (opened, 1874– closed, 2014) to house his personal collection. Corcoran’s collection focused on contemporary American art and included work by, among others, Albert Bierstadt, Emanuel Leutze, Frederic Church, George Inness, Daniel Huntington, Thomas Cole, Seth Eastman, William Ranney, and Thomas Doughty. |
