William Henry Osborn was a railroad executive (Illinois Central from the 1850’s and Chicago, St. Louis & New Orleans RR Co., 1877-82), philanthropist, art collector, and patron of Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). He was married Virginia Reed Sturges (1830-1902) the daughter of the senior member of Sturges Bennett and Company and art collector Jonathan Sturges (1802-1874). Osborn's collection included both American and European paintings, sculptures and prints. Osborn's collection included work by, among others, Church, Rowse, Florent, Defregger, Vautier, Jacobides, Landelle, H P Gray, Cole, Huntington, Durand, Crawford, Stuart, and W H Beard. |
