Virginia Bacon, née Virginia Purdy Barker, was an heiress, musician, philanthropist, art patron and dealer. After the death of her husband, Walter Rathbone Bacon (1845–1917, m. 1882), she inherited her brother-in-law’s, Edward Rathbone Bacon’s (1846–1915), art collection, published catalogues of the paintings and Chinese objects, and sold artworks privately. Bacon sold five paintings to Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), they included a paintings by or then attributed to Sir Thomas Lawrence, Pieter de Hooch, and Francois Boucher (four seasons). Frick later purchased another ten paintings from her estate including the following: Hogarth (Mr. Hamilton), Romney (Mrs. Thomas Raikes & Child), Gainsborough (Richard Brinsley Sheridan), Reynolds (Lady Cecil Rice), Goya (Don Julia Asensio), Hoppner (Princess Sophia), Raeburn (Alexander Allan), then attributed to Dirk Hals (A Jovial Company), Guardi (Venice), and Ruysdael (Waterfall). Bacon was the daughter of Catherine Juliette Vanderbilt Lafitte (1836–1881) and Pierre Gustave Lafitte (1839–1925). |
