history |
Elisabeth Severance Allen Prentiss was a philanthropist, collector and Severance heir (banking, oil, salt, sulphur and steel). Elisabeth was married twice; first in 1892, to Dudley Peter Allen (1852–1915) and in 1917, to Francis Fleury Prentiss (1858–1937). Both husbands were surgeons and connoisseurs of the fine arts. Allen was an expert in Chinese porcelain and one of the first trustees of the Cleveland Museum of Art. She and her husbands formed an art collection of which the bulk was later left to the Cleveland Museum of Art and included paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and most notably tapestries. Elisabeth Severance Allen Prentiss created The Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Foundation in January of 1939. |
