George W. Childs was a Philadelphia publisher, newspaperman (Public Ledger) and philanthropist.

Childs collected art objects and "curios" which filled both his office and home. Included were bamboo and jade carvings from Japan, cloisonné objects, Sevres china as well as Moorish and English silver.
Childs also collected rare books and manuscripts, including a collection of autograph letters.
