history In 1939, Hiram H. Parke and with Otto Bernet co-founded the auction house Parke-Bernet Galleries.

Parke had worked with the auction firm Samuel T Freeman & Co. in Philadelphia and when he moved to New York 1905, he began his own auction firm Hiram H. Parke.

In 1918, he sold his company to and joined the firm American Art Association which in 1939 merged with Anderson Galleries. Parke resigned in 1937 two years before starting his new firm with Otto Bernet.

Parke-Bernet became America’s largest auction house and in 1964 was purchased by Sotheby’s.
