| history | Patty Stuart Jewett was the daughter of George Hay Stuart and Martha Kyle Dennison of Philadelphia. She collected Navajo blankets, Plains beadwork, but most of all baskets, from a wide variety of West Coast First Nations cultures. The collection totaled 238 specimens, valued in 1918 at $12,000. Of more than 150 baskets, nearly two-thirds are Californian. Fifty of the total are Pomo baskets, a high percentage of which are the expensive, solidly feathered kind. There are also a number of small, finely woven miniatures., from a wide variety of West Coast cultures, including the Pomo, the Tulare, and Tlingit. Although she spent most of her adult life in Colorado Springs, CO, and Pasadena, CA, she donated her collection to the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania in her hometown. | |||||||||
