Hinman Barrett Hurlbut was an art collector, horticulturalist, capitalist, railroad man, financier, and lawyer. Hurlbut’s collection included paintings, watercolors, drawings and sculptures. According to The Art Treasures of America, Hurlbut owned works by Emile Adan, C. Baugniet, A. F. Bellows, R. Beyschlag, Otto Bocher, W. A. Bouguereau, Jules Breton, A. T. Bricher, J. G. Brown, A. Cabanel, E. Castau, John G. Chapman, F. E. Church, M. F. H. De Haas, A. De Vriendt, Blaise Desgoffe, N. Diaz, A. B. Durand, E. Fichel, Edouard Frère, Theodore Frère, S. R. Gifford, J. M. Hart, William Hart, M. J. Heade, J. B. Irving, J. G. Jacquet, Eastman Johnson, F. A. Kaulbach, L. Knaus, I. Leon-Y-Escosura, Gabriel Max, Jervis McEntee, H. Merle, J. G. Meyer Von Bremen, F. Meyerheim, Thomas Moran, V. Palmaroli, Rembrandt Peale, E. Preyer, J. Robie, R. Rogers, Ad. Schreyer, Anton Seitz, Henry P. Smith, Arthur J. Strutt, A. F. Tait, Luther Terry, J. R. Tilton, A. Toulmouche, K. Van Elten, Eugene Verboeckhoven, Francis Voltz, Carl M. Webb, T. W. Wood, and Felix Ziem. Hurlbut married Jane Elisabeth Johnson (1818–1910) in 1840. Their residence at 3233 Euclid Avenue was designed and built by architects Heard & Porter, 1855–58. Hurlbut left his art collection and a sum of money to the city of Cleveland for the formation of an art museum, which opened to the public in 1916. The Cleveland Art Museum held exhibitions primarily drawn from Hurlbut’s collection in 1917, 1921, and 1922. |
