| history | Carla Emil, a Chicago native, is an arts philanthropist and collector active in the Bay Area scene alongside her husband, Rich Silverstein. Among the 300-plus works in their collection are paintings by Francis Picabia, Kurt Schwitters, Alexander Calder, Maurizio Cattelan, Pipilotti Rist, and Helen Levitt. She is the founder of C Project, a nonprofit organization which commissions leading contemporary artists to craft original, site-specific performance-based art experiences in San Francisco, all of which are free and accessible to the public. Emil’s commitment to the arts is underscored by her extensive involvement in numerous prestigious institutions; she has served on the boards of SFMOMA, Dia, Second Stage Theater in New York, SFFILM, and CCA, where she holds the title of emeritus trustee.
