history | Dr. Alan Leslie was a prominent figure in the world of Southern California art. He specialized in collecting the work of contemporary West Coast modernists, particularly those associated with the Synchronism movement, which was an offshoot of abstract expressionism. His collection included works by notable artists such as Stanton MacDonald Wright, Hans Burkhardt, and Lee Mullican. Dr. Leslie's bequeathed his extensive art collection to prestigious institutions like the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. His commitment to the arts was further highlighted by the establishment of a humanities center in his and Fannie's names at Dartmouth College, his alma mater. Leslie and his wife lived in the Alan Leslie House, designed by modernist architect E. Stewart Williams in 1977. | |||||||||
