history |
T. & R. Annan and Sons was a British photography gallery. In addition to dealing in photography they were known for exhibiting, photographing, and selling prints, paintings, and illustrated fine art catalogues. The firm held exhibitions for artists, such as L. S. Lowry’s (1887-1976) in 1946. Professional photographer Thomas Annan (1829-1871) opened the firm in 1855; it was then known as Thomas Annan, and was listed as a calotype printer. Two of his sons, James Craig Annan (1864-1946) and John Annan (1862-) later joined the firm, and in 1873, Thomas’s brother Robert joined and the firm became T. & R Annan & Sons. Thomas Annan purchased the rights to the photogravure process in Britain from Karel Václav Klí (1841-1926) of Vienna in 1883 after visiting the city and learning the technique with his second son, James. James is associated with late nineteenth-century art photography; his works were reproduced in Alfred Stieglitz’s publication Camera Work. The firm was the official photographers for the Glasgow International Exhibitions of 1888, 1901, and 1911. In 2006, T. & R. Annan and Sons decided to move away completely from the art dealing side of things and go back and concentrate on the collection of old photographs. Annan Gallery was sold in 2006 and is no longer related to T. & R. Annan and Sons, Ltd. |
