history After establishing a gallery in Paris in 1962, Sonnabend opened the New York location in 1970, first on Madison Avenue and then in SoHo, where it became central to the downtown art scene. The gallery was instrumental in introducing American Pop Art to Europe and later brought European movements like Arte Povera and Conceptual Art to the U.S. It exhibited influential artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons, and Vito Acconci. Known for its bold curatorial vision, the gallery played a vital role in shaping postwar art and remained active until the early 2010s.
