John Taylor Johnston was an art collector, railroad executive, and first president of Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1870-1889. Johnston sold his art collection in 1876 realizing approximately $328,000. The collection was comprised of both American and European works of art and included work by Gilbert Stuart, Allston, West, Church, Eastman Johnson, Durand, Kensett, Thomas Cole, Huntington, Holman Hunt, and Delaroche among others. Johnston is discussed in Frederick Baekeland's "Collectors of American Painting, 1813-1913," American Art Review, 3, Nov.-Dec. 1976. Lent work to The Universal Exhibition held in Paris, 1867. |
