history Olyphant was a collector, businessman, and Rail Road Executive (President of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, 1884-1903).

Robert M. Olyphant was a close friend and art patron of John Frederick Kensett, a leading landscape painter of the Hudson River School who worked extensively in New England and Colorado. Olyphant also served as executor of Kensett's estate.

Olyphant was a fellow of the National Academy of Design, member of the American Geographical Society, the Academy of Political Science, and American Museum of Natural History.
