Olyphant was a collector, businessman, and Rail Road Executive (President of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, 1884-1903). Robert M. Olyphant was a close friend and art patron of John Frederick Kensett, a leading landscape painter of the Hudson River School who worked extensively in New England and Colorado. Olyphant also served as executor of Kensett's estate. Olyphant was a fellow of the National Academy of Design, member of the American Geographical Society, the Academy of Political Science, and American Museum of Natural History. President of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad (1884-1903) Olyphant is discussed in Frederick Baekeland's "Collectors of American Painting, 1813-1913," American Art Review, 3, Nov.-Dec. 1976. Lent work to The Universal Exhibition held in Paris, 1867. |
