Born in Germany Carl Frederick William Schaus, Schaus was a New York City art dealer. His first gallery, on lower Broadway across from Astor Place, specialized in prints and engravings. He later sold French and American Art before moving into the Old Master market. Schaus married Margaret Schenck Conover ine 1851 (1826–1878). The couple had five children: Wilhelm “William” George Schaus (London, 1859–1942; Annie Walton Brinkmann (Lunenburg, Germany, 1853–); Wilhelmina Schaus Kennard (Hackensack, NJ, 1857–); Mabel Tyler Wait (Sturgis, MI, 1866–1901); and, Margaret Conover Koehler (Bad Rehburg, Germany). His nephew Herman Schaus (1850-1911), and later son ran Schaus Galleries. |
