history Carmen Kreeger, nee Matanzo y Jaramillo, was a school teacher by trade, an art collector, philanthropist, patron and amateur musician and Gardner.

She and her husband, David Lloyd Kreeger (1909 – 1990), amassed an art collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, drawings and prints. Their Washington DC home was built by Philip Johnson in the 1960’s to showcase their art collection.

The collection focused on European and American paintings and sculpture from the 1850’s forward and included work by, among others, Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Henry Moore, Jacques Lipchitz, August Renoir, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Wassily Kandinsky, Hans Hoffman, Sam Gilliam, Edgar Degas, Charles-François Daubigny, Jean-Batiste-Camille Corot, Paul Cézanne, George Braque, Eugène Boudin, Pierre Bonnard, Lucien Wercollier, Joan Miró and Milton Avery.

While the bulk of the Kreeger collection was western in origin it also included works of art from Asia, West and Central Africa.

Mrs. Kreeger moved out of the modern Mediterranean mansion in 1992, two years after her husband's death, and it opened as a museum in 1994 with about 180 works on display.

The Kreeger’s had two children; Carol Ingall of Chicago and Peter Kreeger of Potomac, MD.
