James "Diamond Jim" Buchanan Brady was a businessman (railroad), art and gem collector. Brady earned his reputation as “Diamond Jim” as he purportedly owned 2 million dollars’ of diamond adornments. In addition to diamonds, and other gems, Brady collected ivories, bronzes, marbles, porcelain, armor, prints, paintings and textiles. Paintings from Brady’s collection sold at the American Art Galleries via the American Art Association on January 15, 1918 (98 paintings brought $58,310), and included work by by, among others, J. J. Henner, Eugène Delacroix, Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, Louis Aston Knight, George Inness, Adolf Schreyer, Albert Blakelock, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, and Felix Zeim. |
