James Mansell Constable was a New York City Merchant, member of Arnold, Constable & Co., and according to a New York Times article from June 12, 1900, owned pictures which were to be disbursed evenly amongst his children. Constable came to America in 1938, joined a dry goods firm, Arnold & Co. , by 1842 he was a full partner in the firm, and in 1845 Married the daughter of its founder, Aaron Arnold (1794–1876), Henrietta Arnold (1822–1881). Constable was a member of the Union League Club, Director of the Bank of New York, Vice President of the Museum of Natural History, a Director of the Merchants Savings institution, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He owned the Constable Building at 5th Avenue and 11th Street. |
