history George D. Horst was a businessman, art collector, and founding partner of the hosiery firm Nolde & Horst.

Horst was involved in establishing the Reading Public Museum and had promised his art collection to the museum. In the 1920's Horst had a falling out with the museum only 20 of his promised gift remained at the Museum.

The George D. Horst collection included work by, among others, Charles Daubigny, Childe Hassam, Frank Weston Benson, Daniel Garber, Edward Redfield, even Emil CarlsenFred Wagner, Howard Butler, Aldro Hibbard, John Carlson, William Lathrop, Edward Moran, George Noyes, and William Trost Richards.

The collection was auctioned via Freeman’s on March 31, 2014, and reaped $4.3 million in sales.
