Arthur Emmanuel Vershbow was a mechanical engineer, book, and art collector. Vershbow served as a trustee for the Newton Free Library, Boston Athenaeum (1977–), and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (1966–1975). He was a member Club of Odd Vols. (president 1977, 1978, 1979), Grolier Club (New York City), and St. Botolph Club (Boston). Together with his wife, née Charlotte Zimmerman (m. 1946, 1924–2000), he built a collection of prints, drawings, and watercolors. Their collection included work by, among others, Jacques Callot, Francisco de Goya, Honoré Daumier, Max Beckmann, René Boyvin, Wenzel Jamnitzer, Tiepolo, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Odilon Redon, Marc Chagall, and Wassily Kandinsky. Though the couple made regular gifts over the course of their collecting careers to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the bulk of the collection was sold via Christie’s New York in 2013. The Vershbow’s had two children: Annual and Alexander Veshbow. |
