James Dwyer Gill was an art dealer, collector, stationer, bookseller, and publisher. Gill specialized in American art and sold paintings, engravings, and photographs. He exhibited work by, among others, Col. James Fairman, Frederick E. Church, James M. Hart, Walter Shirlaw, Edgar M. Ward, J. G. Brown, A. F. Bellows, A. H. Wyant, M. F. H de Haas, Winslow Homer, F. A Bridgman, and George Inness. Appointed by President McKinely, Gill served as the Internal Revenue collector for the Third Massachusetts District from 1897-1913. Additionally he served as Springfield’s Common Councillor, Alderman, president of the Republican Club, and member of Springfield’s Art Association. His first wife was Evelyn L Clyde (1852-1923) and they had one child, James Milton Gill (1875-1943). In 1927, after the death of his wife, he married the education philanthropist Mrs. Emily Frances Lombard Abbey (1856-1950). |
