Abris Silberman was a scholar, collector, and art dealer. Silberman studied art history at Budapest University, and came to the United States in 1928, at the invitation of the art collector, Otto H. Kahn (1867–1934), who had purchased enamels from him. He stayed in New York and opened a branch of his family’s Viennese gallery, E. and A. Silberman Galleries. In 1938, his brother, Elkan Silberman (1892–1952), joined him in operating the New York gallery. The gallery was first located on 57th Street, also operated at 578 Madison Ave, and located later at 1008 Fifth Ave. He married the former Margaret Gordon (1912–1969) in 1932, the marriage ended in divorce in 1954. She established her own art gallery, Picasso Arts, in 1957 it closed in 1965. They had a daughter, Susan Silberman Woodford (husband F. Peter Woodford). |
