Active within the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) Edward Hornor Coates was a financier (Mechanics’ Bank director), art collector and patron. Coate’s wife, the poet Florence Van Leer Earle Nicholson Coates (1850–1927), gave The Edward H. Coates Memorial Collection to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. PAFA exhibited the collection from November 4, 1923 to January 10, 1924. The Collection included, among others, Carleton Wiggins (1848-1932), Robert W. Vonnoh (1858-1933), Thomas Hovenden (1840–1895), Bessie Potter Vonnoh (1872–1955), Thomas Moran (1837–1926), Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), Charles D. Weldon (1855–1935), William Trost Richards (1833–1905), and John Henry Twachtman (1853–1902). Coates served as PAFA’s president from 1890–1906; Chairman of PAFA’s Committee on Instruction (1883-90); Chairman of Muybridge Comm’n for Investigation of Animal Locomotion at the University of PA, 1883; President of The Gilbert Stuart Memorial Association, 1891; and the Transatlantic Society of America, 1900. |
