Conrad Turner Bussell and his wife, nee Pauline Winterstein (m. 1926), were collectors of African Art. While serving as the appointed General Receiver of Customs in Monrovia, Liberia, from 1923-1929, he and his wife Pauline, formed a collection of works by indigenous artists from ethnic groups such as the Gola, Vai, Dan, Kpelle, and Mende tribes. Forty-six works of art from their collection were transferred to the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1988, by their son, Robert Bruce Bussell and his wife, Catherine O’Carroll Bussel of Arlington, VA (41 were accepted as gifts and 5 were museum purchases). Supporting archival papers transferred to the museum's Archives from the Department of The Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia & the Pacific Islands (AAAPI) in 2008. |
