| history | Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Raymond J. McGuire is a former Wall Street executive, art collector, and former New York City mayoral candidate. Along with his wife, the filmmaker and author Crystal McCrary, he has built a significant collection of African American and African art, starting with works from the late 19th century and moving on to the early and mid-20th century. McGuire’s collection also includes works by some of today's leading artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, and David Hammons. In addition to paintings and sculptures, a significant portion of the collection is photography, featuring iconic images by Roy DeCarava, Gordon Parks, and Malick Sidibé, among others. McGuire also collects the works of Harlem Renaissance artists and abstractionists. McGuire has served on the board of the Whitney Museum since 1994. He has also chaired the board of the Studio Museum in Harlem for two decades. | ||||||
