history Richard Melancthon Hurd was a businessman and art collector.

Hurd’s collection of Italian primitives was on view at The Newhouse Galleries in 1937. The collection included paintings by, or attributed to in 1937, Fra Filippo Lippi, Perugino, Matteo di Giovanni, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Deodato Orlandi, Giovanni del Biondo, Luca di Tommè, Antonio Veneziano, Jacopo del Sellaio, and others.
Hurd married to Lucy Gazzam Hurd (1872-1962) in 1898. They had five children, they were as follows: Mary (b. 1899), Eleanor (b. 1902), Richard Hurd (b. 1905); Clement Gazzam Hurd (1908-1988), Lucy Lea (1920-1994, m. Lieut. John Spangler Farington).

Hurd was a member of the Economic Association, and the University, Yale, Down-Town, Alpine, Pilgrims, Automobile of American, and Rumson Country clubs.
