John Lawrence Riker was a chemical merchant, the founder of the chemical firm J. L. & S. D. Riker, and an art collector. Riker owned work by, among others, J. B. C. Corot, Emile Van Marcke, Daubigny, Adolph Schreyer, Fromentin, John Frederick Kensett, William Trost Richards, Leon Richet, Edward Allan Schmidt, Charles Emile Jacque, Jules Dupre, (Knoedler & Co. appraised the collection for the estate). Riker was a member of the Holland and St. Nicholas Societies, the Sons of the Revolution, and the St. Nicholas, Union League, Metropolitan, City, Riding, New York Yacht, Seawanhaka-Corinthian Yacht, and New York Athletic clubs. Riker married Miss Mary Anne Jackson in 1857. They had seven children: John Jackson Riker, Henry L. Riker, Sameul Riker, Charles Lawrence Riker, Lavinia Riker Strong (son-in-law James R. Strong), May “Margaret” M. Riker Haskell (son-in-law J. Amory Haskell), Mattina “Martha” Riker Proctor (son-in-law James H. Proctor). |
