Edward Greey was an author, scholar, and an art dealer who specialized in Japanese art. He served in the English Army in the 1860's and was stationed in China and Japan. While in Japan he studied their culture, afterwards he moved to New York City where he first operated as a perfumer before he opened the Art Gallery of Edward Greey at 20 East 70th Street. In 1885 he purchased the art collection of Captain Francis Brinkley (1841-1912) of Yokohama, Japan. He then sold the collection from his seventeenth street gallery. In 1888, due to financial troubles he committed suicide and his gallery closed in 1890. |
