Emil Winter was an industrialist (Pittsburgh Steel Company, American Refractories Company, American-Austrian Magnesite Corporation), banker (Workingman’s Savings Bank and Trust Company of Pittsburgh), and art collector. He served as a trustee for the Mercy Hospital and Tuberculosis league in Pittsburgh. The Winter collection included paintings (Barbizon and other), bronzes, Brussels tapestries, rugs, French and Italian furniture, silver, linens, and other fine appointments. Winter owned work by, among others Sir Henry Raeburn (1756–1823), Félix Ziem (1821–1911), Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875), Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), Leon Augustin L’Hermitte (1844–1925), J. J. Henner (1829–1905), Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819–1916), Francesco Guardi (1712–1793), Théodore Rousseau (1821–1867), Charles Daubigny (1817–1878), and Antoine-Louis Barye (1796–1875). Winter purchased the old Thaw mansion at 1051 Beechwood Boulevard in Pittsburgh and renovated it. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Winter (1857-1930); they had one son, Dwight Winter (1884–1957). |
