history |
Famous for his role in the construction of New York City's Crystal Palace (Superintendent Architect and Engineer), Christian Edward Detmold was a civil engineer, businessman, and art collector. Detmold's collection was sold at an auction held by Fifth Avenue Galleries on February 27, 1890. Detmold's art collection included oil paintings (contemporary and works attributed to old masters), watercolors, engravings, bronzes, porcelains (European and Asian), and Faiences (purchased from the Castellani Sale in Paris). Works of art were then attributed to Antoine-Louis Barye, Rembrandt, Cuyp, Bissolo, Van Dyck, Diaz, Merle, Inness, and Voltz. Detmold was a member of the Century and Union League Clubs. He was married to Phoebe Lord Crary, and they had two children: Wilhemina E. d'Arschot (1840-1912, married to Count Gaston d'Arschot), and Zella Trelawney Lentilhon (1839-1891, married to Joseph Lentilhon, 1839-1895). |
