history Bernard I. Lumpkin is a contemporary art collector, patron, educator, and former MTV executive born in Los Angeles in 1970. The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection features a range of contemporary artworks in all media. Established and emerging artists of African descent predominate, with a special emphasis on younger voices in the first quarter of the 21st century. Represented in the collection are: Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Kevin Beasley, Jordan Casteel, Chase Hall, Rashid Johnson, Deana Lawson, Eric N. Mack, Kerry James Marshall, Narcisisster, Jennifer Packer, Christina Quarles, LaToya Ruby-Frazier, Jacolby Satterwhite, Sable Elyse Smith, Vaughn Spann, and Henry Taylor. The collection is the subject of a bestselling book —Young, Gifted and Black: A New Generation of Artists and an eponymous nationwide traveling exhibition which began in 2019.

Lumpkin currently sits on the Board of Trustees of the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. At the Whitney Museum of American Art, Lumpkin serves on the Education Committee and on the Painting & Sculpture Committee. At the Museum of Modern Art, he serves on the Media & Performance Committee and is also the Vice-Chair of the Friends of Education patron group. Lumpkin has advised public and private organizations on collecting and patronage, and participated in discussion panels at art fairs, auction houses, and universities. Lumpkin was educated at Harvard (A.M., Ph.D.) and Yale (B.A.), where he has served on the Dean's Council at the School of Art.
