history |
Dealer in Old Master paintings originally located in Berlin. Kurt Backstitz opened his gallery in Berlin in 1921, and shortly afterward in the Hague and New York. Beginning in 1931 Backstitz handled the sale of some of the collection of Viennese collector Stefan von Auspitz to von Beuningen. Bachstitz, a Jew, fled Germany during the Nazi regime and was able to obtain a visa to Switzerland in 1942 with the intervention of his brother in law, Walter Andreas Hofer (Goering's dealer). |
