John Work Garrett was an American banker, diplomat, collector and bibliophile. He was born in Baltimore, MD in 1872. He received the B.S. degree from Princeton in 1895 and became a member of the family firm, Robert Garret & Sons in 1896. Garrett joined the Foreign Service in 1901 and served at several foreign offices including Venezuela, the Netherlands, and Argentina. He returned to Baltimore in 1922 and ran unsuccessfully as the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. In 1929, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Italy. After his retirement from the Diplomatic Corps, he and his wife Alice returned to Evergreen House, their residence in Baltimore, where he devoted his time to broadening his collections, especially his extensive library. John Work Garrett died in Baltimore, MD in 1942. |
