history |
Martha Catherine Codman Karolik was an art collector and philanthropist. She was a cousin of Ogden Codman, Jr., and a great granddaughter of Elias Haskett Derby of Salem, Massachusetts, who was considered the first American millionaire. In 1928, at the age of 72, Martha married the performer Maxim Karolik who was 35 years her junior. The Karoliks were major collectors of American decorative and fine arts and donated much of their collections to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Included in Karolik's collection were paintings by Gilbert Stuart, Sully, Chester Garding, Morse, Asher B. Durand, Cole, Doughty, Kenset and furniture by John Goddard, a noted Newport cabinet maker. Karolik belonged to the National Society of Colonial Dames, the Art Association of Newport, Garden Club, Improvement Association, Historical Society, and the Redwood Library. |
